Motoring News: Classic Etiquette For Modern Motorists
Bad manners can drive even the most patient of drivers mad, so when motorists are pushed to the limit it's no surprise it leads to road rage. "There is a right and proper way to behave behind the wheel, and people need to learn it", reports etiquette publisher Debrett's.
One of the ways that people think bad habits should be dealt with is by including etiquette lessons as mandatory in the driving test. The Telegraph reports that "the driving test should be overhauled to include new etiquette section to nip road rage, middle lane hogging and selfish parking in the bud". Even radio stations are hammering the point home that motorists need to "brush up manners while in their cars", according to Classic FM, and that we should be following the motoring manners of older generations.
Looking back at old movies and TV dramas you can see the traditional etiquette that motorists used to use when gliding around in their classic automobile. The Sky News website reveals that the way we drive is a clear indication of the type of person we are in life, not just behind the wheel. "Any signs of aggression and your passengers will most likely assume that in life, as well as behind the wheel, you are a volatile and impatient person". Another taboo subject when it comes to motoring manners is loud music, which in recent surveys has ended up as one of the top bug bears among motorists.
Imagine a classic E-Type Jaguar gracefully gliding through the countryside with the likes of rapper Jay Z blaring out of its delicate speakers – now that would be a sight for sore eyes! Driving in the 1950's beckoned sense and sensibility, and getting from A top B wasn't just a means to an end – it was a pastime with a Sunday drive often being the highlight of the week. This comes as no surprise when you see some of the vintage motors that emerged in that era, including the Peugeot 403 with its solid virtues and neat Pininfarina (Italian car design) style. Other classic cars to come from the 1950s are the Bentley Continental, which boasted both comfort and speed and the Chevrolet Corvette with its stylish fibre-glass body, red interior and canvas top.
There have been many reports recently claiming that the roads are becoming a more hazardous place to be, so by "taking the time to be courteous towards other drivers should help make the roads a safer place for everyone", according to the Telegraph website. President of the AA has also said that "good old-fashioned manners could bring back the smile to driver's faces and remove the threat of road rage". It just goes to show, good manners and traditional etiquette could be the perfect remedy for those motoring blues.
