Corvette Spark Plug Wires
No spark in distributor or plugs.?
I have a 1968 GMC Sierra P/U with a 327 5.4L 78 Corvette Engine. While running in idle the engine died, to be safe I replaced the distributor, cap, rotor and ignition coil (all 78 corvette HEI). I double checked that the spark plugs were in the proper firing order, the starter will crank and the engine will turn, carburator smells of fuel (engine back fired once or twice) . I'm at a blank, what could I be missing? Fusable link maybe? All fuses look good and I dont see any obviously damaged wires etc.
Your original ignition system had a resistor wire to power the coil, which lowered the voltage to 9V. If you have not done so already, run a 12V lead to you distributor from the ignition switch.
HEI distributor - make sure the plug from the distributor to the cap is clipped into place, & the power wire is plugged into the "Bat" side of the cap, not the "Tach".
Back-firing is due to incorrect timing.
• Remove #1 Spark plug (driver's side - front)
• Place your finer over the hole.
• Bump the engine over until it pops.
• Align timing marks to TDC
• Double check your firing order
1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 – Rotor turns clockwise
#1 lead is on the driver's side front of the cap beside the power plug. If the rotor is not pointing to that lead, remove the distributor & repositiong.
If all checks out & you have spark, but still won't start, place a screw diver in the choke butterfly to hold it open. Place the accellerator pedal to the floor while cranking.
