Toyota Crashes: The Automaker’S Troubles Accelerate

Toyota, mighty Toyota!  The automaker has been known for

building quality vehicles that have accumulated a real standing

with consumers.  In many instances, entire families of drivers

drive only Toyotas!

 

Before the Big Three hit financial trouble, Toyota overtook GM

in vehicle sales volume.  I frankly wondered what other auto

company could hang with Toyota let alone surpass it.

 

Well, as with other automakers (Porsche, GM, Chrysler, etc.),

Toyota is taking a real hit.  The automaker has just announced

that beginning February 1st, it will suspend sales of the following

models: the 09-10 RAV4, Corolla and Matrix hatchback; the

05-10 Avalon; the 07-10 Camry; the 10 Highlander; the 07-10

Tundra; and the 08-10 Sequoia.  Like its competitors, Toyota

is fighting for every vehicle sale it can get and this development

is about the worst thing that could happen.

 

Less than one week ago, Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles and

the automaker had recalled 4.2 million vehicles last fall.  The issue

is a serious ‘unintended’ vehicle acceleration.  Toyota previously

thought that the driver’s side floor mat was causing the accelerator

to remain on.  Now, however, it is thought that the accelerator

mechanism itself is possibly breaking down thus causing the

vehicle acceleration.  The problem actually is reported to have 

begun in March 2007.  Regarding the vehicle sales discontinuation,

Bob Carter, Toyota group vice president says,

“This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized.â€

 

If Toyota employed ‘cost cutting’ with the component related to

the acceleration problem, it calls into question the auto industry’s

general practice of seeking such ‘savings.'

In the late 80s, Audi encountered unintended vehicle acceleration, 

and it took the automaker about 20 years to recover.  Toyota has

crashed,  and just how bad it will be remains to be seen!
